8L80/8L90 4WD to 2WD Conversion Guide

Output shaft swap, housing conversion, fluid spec, and post-swap leveling procedure.

🛢️ Required Transmission Fluid

The officially mandated fluid for GM 8-speed (8L80/8L90) transmissions mated to Gen V LT engines is Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP.

⚠️ Do not use the old black-label formulation (GM #19355656). It was discontinued because it caused transmission shuddering in 8-speed units. Always buy the blue-label bottle.

⚠️ Critical Alignment Step — Read Before You Start

On the output shaft there are two thrust bearings. You must ensure they do not bind up, shift out of place, or stick to the housing. If you tighten the 2WD housing extension down while they are improperly seated, the bearings will fracture and destroy the internal components of your transmission.

🛠️ Step-by-Step Conversion Process

Step 1 — Prep the Gasket

GM uses a reusable transmission pan gasket. Remove it carefully and dab it completely dry before setting it aside for reinstallation later.

Step 2 — Remove Internal Components

Use an 8mm socket to remove the bolts holding the two internal plastic sensors. Pull them straight up and out of their slots. Then use a 13mm socket to remove the two bolts securing the internal bracket arm to clear your workspace.

Step 3 — Swap the Shaft and Housing

Lift the stock 4WD rear housing cover completely off the unit. Pull the stock 4WD output shaft straight out. Drop your new 2WD conversion shaft down into the center support. Slide your new 2WD housing adapter over the shaft. Using a 15mm socket, tighten the adapter bolts evenly in a cross pattern to 37 ft-lbs.

Step 4 — Reinstall Sensors and Brackets

Reinsert the two plastic sensors back into their designated holes. Using your 8mm socket, torque the sensor bolts to 80 in-lbs. Do not overtighten — they have a metal inner sleeve but a plastic body that will fracture under excessive force. Reinstall the bracket arm using the 13mm bolts and torque to 16 ft-lbs.

Step 5 — Reassemble and Initial Fill

Place the dried reusable gasket back onto the pan mating surface. Position the transmission pan and hand-start all 15 bolts to avoid cross-threading. Using your 10mm socket, tighten in a crossing/star pattern to 89 in-lbs.

Locate the fill port plug on the passenger side of the transmission case-to-pan surface. Using a fluid pump, pump in 6.5 to 7 quarts of Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP as an initial benchmark. Reinstall the fill plug.

🚨 Critical Fill Warning for LT Swaps

The 6.5–7 quart initial fill is an approximate starting point only. This transmission does not have a traditional dipstick. The swap is not complete until a hot leveling procedure is performed. Running the vehicle based solely on the starting estimate can cause severe under-filling or over-filling, leading to permanent internal clutch damage.

🛢️ Refill Capacity

For a standard pan-drop and 2WD conversion layout refill, the 8L80/8L90 takes approximately 7.0 to 7.4 quarts of Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP. Order at least 8 quarts to have enough for the leveling procedure.

🔍 Post-Swap Leveling Procedure

Must be performed on a lift or level ground with the vehicle completely flat.

1 — Get the Transmission to Operating Temp

Start the vehicle while level on jack stands or a hoist. Hold the brakes and cycle the shifter smoothly through every gear range (P → R → N → D), holding each position for at least 3 seconds. Return to Park. Keep the vehicle idling until a scan tool or driver information center shows Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) between 95°F and 115°F (35°C to 45°C).

Note: Fluid volume expands roughly 5% as it heats up. Testing outside this temperature range yields inaccurate readings.

2 — Check the Level Plug

With the engine still running and the vehicle completely flat, remove the 10mm fluid level check plug at the bottom of the transmission oil pan.

If fluid flows out in a steady stream: Let it drain into a pan until it slows to a light, consistent trickle/drip, then immediately reinstall the plug.
If no fluid comes out: Add fluid through the case fill port until it begins to stream out of the bottom check plug, wait for it to transition to a light trickle, then lock the plug down.

3 — Torque the Check Plug

Snug the pan check plug down to 80 in-lbs (9 Nm). Do not overtighten.

💡 Wicked Wrench "Pro Tips"

Inch-Pounds vs. Foot-Pounds: The pan bolts are torqued to 89 in-lbs — that is only about 7.4 ft-lbs. If you accidentally set your torque wrench to foot-pounds and crank to 89, you will strip the aluminum pan rail. Double-check your wrench setting before touching those bolts.

Thrust Bearing Trap: Before torquing the 2WD housing adapter, physically verify both thrust bearings are seated flat and centered. Spin the output shaft by hand — if you feel any roughness or binding, stop and reseat the bearings before proceeding.

Blue Label Only: The old black-label Dexron VI fluid will cause shudder in these units within a few thousand miles. If the bottle doesn’t have the blue banner and the DEXRON® HP license code J-62120 on the back, put it back on the shelf.
